Soho Vault Repair
Rojas AP was tasked to design a solution for a leaking sidewalk vault in Soho. The existing granite sidewalk slabs were supported by a steel structure that through the years of water infiltration had become rust corroded. Rojas AP took a unique design approach to restore this vault by leaving the historical granite slabs in place while replacing the structural steel below. To avoid future water infiltration at the vault street wall, waterproofing was installed at the exterior of the street wall. Additionally, there were some issues on the sidewalk. All visible repairs needed to comply with the Landmarks Preservation Committee (LPC). Among them, Rojas AP aimed to address a sunken granite piece which was a concern for future water infiltration. To match the granite slab in color, a silicate coating was specified that used five different colors applied after initial curing to mimic the look of granite. Rojas AP worked closely with the LPC Preservationist to meet their expectations. Silicone sealant was specified at all horizontal granite joints to provide robust protection against water infiltration. The overall approach to this vault replacement met the client’s budget and goals.
